With our current generation of learners and in this era of iPods, web-based conferencing and internet search engines, textbooks and lectures are going out of style. Interactive learning and small group work is favored by students. However, often a lecture is our only option because of limitations on resources, time and manpower. How do we make our lectures more captivating? How do we make them unforgettable?
Audience Response Systems (ARS) are growing in popularity as a tool to engage learners during more traditional large group lecture formats. ARS can be used for assessment of learning, emphasis of material as well as just to add some flare to a standard powerpoint presentation. Multiple studies demonstrate improved retention of material using measurable learning outcomes with the use of ARS.
This workshop is designed to equip participants with the fundamentals of ARS, how to write effective questions for ARS, and practical considerations about purchasing and using ARS in the medical classroom. Additionally, we will have the opportunity for see a hands-on demonstration of the incorporation of ARS into powerpoint throughout the workshop.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate ARS in action
- Discuss the rational for using Audience Response Systems (ARS) in medical education
- Outline ARS question types and best practices
- Outline practical concerns regarding use of ARS
