The EBM process is encompassed by 4 steps that both begin and end with the patient:

  1. Articulating the "Clinical Question"

  2. Acquiring the Evidence to answer the Clinical Question

  3. Appraising the Evidence

  4. Formulating a Recommendation

  5. Applying the Recommendation

In the context of Journal Clubs, the EBM process can be best emulated when the process begins with a clinical question rather than a specific article. Although resident physicians have ample exposure to patients and time to go through this process in a formal curriculum, medical students often to do not because of the time limits of clerkships and electives. Therefore, the following are 2 different approaches to an EBM Journal Club that can be used if the Learner has ample time versus limited time to complete the exercise.
