Data management is an integral aspect of educational research. Unfortunately, many researchers neglect data management during study design only to encounter significant difficulty when attempting to perform the data analysis. This workshop was designed to help participants understand the benefits of incorporating data management into study planning. Participants received an overview of methods of data collection, data variable types, and creation of date code books. Participants then had the opportunity to practice each of these skills on a sample study. The workshop concludes with practical tips for preparing for the statistical consult, such as data entry, data cleaning, and software options.
Learning Objectives
- Describe the continuum of data management
- List data collection instruments / approaches
- Understand how to create a data dictionary
- Describe methods to check and clean data
- Describe various data analytic tools
- Describe how to decide on statistical approaches
